From Saddlery to Status Symbol: The Evolution of Hermès
The dream began in 1837 in Paris when the harness maker Thierry Hermes opened up a workshop. They moved the workshop and, in 1880, he opened a store with his son. They made harnesses and saddles, and their company was known for simplicity and lightness.
In 1922, they introduced leather goods and secured the rights to use a zipper on their bags. Three years later, they created their first men's golf jacket. Then came jewelry and sandals.
Hermes’ iconic and timeless scarf was invented in 1937. Then, a little over ten years later, their ties were born. Fun fact: men wore suits to gamble in Cannes, France, and were denied entry, so they popped into the Hermes store and bought their elegant ties. This created their immense popularity.
In 1956, the Kelly bag was born. The bag is dedicated to the Princess of Monaco. In 1956, Grace Kelly carried the bag, and the photos were seen around the world. This is why they changed the name to the Kelly bag to honor her name and legacy in fashion and beyond.
Not too long later, their first women’s ready-to-wear collection was launched. It showcased their elegant yet simple style, which was adored by many.
Not until 1984 was the iconic Birkin bag ready for purchase. The story behind the bag was the chance encounter between Jean Louis Dumas, the descendant of Mr. Hermes, and the singer and actress Jane Birkin. He spoke to her on a flight they both shared, and she told him her ideal bag. Voluminous and stylish from daytime to evening.
To even purchase a Birkin today, you need to have a good relationship with the store. Then, from there, if they believe you are worthy of one, they will allow you to purchase it when the limited-edition bag becomes available. It's known as the “unicorn” bag, given how challenging it is to obtain.
It wasn’t until 2020 that they introduced beauty to their brand. Titled Rogue Hermes, which spanned over five years before release. The beauty line continues to emphasize the timeless wonder and charm of its brand.
This brand continues to reinvent itself and is one of the few luxury brands that still has the family name running things behind closed doors. Hermes will forever be in style, one buckle at a time.
