Community Spotlight: GIN Is Turning Life Experience Into Music

For Los Angeles musician GIN, music is a place to process what life brings her.

“My music is positive and spiritual. As an artist I process my emotions through music. It is a real beautiful thing.”

That relationship with music has taken GIN through different sides of the industry, from promoting other artists and booking talent to eventually stepping forward as an artist herself.

Now, she's preparing to release one of her most personal songs yet.

From Promoter to Artist

GIN says music has always been part of her life.

“I always loved music!”

But her path into the industry didn't initially begin behind a microphone.

“I started in the music industry as a Promoter, then I became a Booking Agent and I decided to take my artistry seriously.”

In 2012, she took that step by releasing her first EP, My Lyrical Expression.

Her creative influences reach back to the music she grew up listening to, including 2Pac and RBL Posse.

Over time, GIN developed an approach to making music that is rooted in positivity, spirituality, and her own emotions.

And sometimes that means turning difficult experiences into songs.

“Demon in a Bottle”

GIN is currently preparing to release a new single titled “Demon in a Bottle.”

The story behind it is personal.

“I am about to drop a new single titled ‘Demon in a Bottle.’ This is about personal experience where my ex was a substance abuser. I decided to leave the relationship and wrote this song.”

Instead of separating her music from what she's lived through, GIN uses those experiences as part of her creative expression.

“Demon in a Bottle” is one example of that process taking something personal and putting it into music.

Finding the People Who Support Your Work

For GIN, one of the hardest parts of being an independent artist has been finding the right people willing to support what she's creating.

“The hardest thing is finding people to support your craft.”

Her response has been to keep networking.

“One of the main things as an Artist that I do is network. I like to network, especially with DJs that can play my music.”

Along the way, she's found DJs who have supported her work, something she says she's thankful for.

But she's also encountered people who haven't.

Rather than allowing that to stop her, GIN sees it as part of the process.

“Sometimes I come across DJs that don't. So it's just a reminder to keep going until I find the right people that support.”

It's a simple philosophy for any independent creative: not everyone has to believe in what you're doing.

You have to keep moving until you find the people who do.

More Than Music

There's another side to GIN that people discovering her through music might not expect.

She's also built a career in real estate.

“One of the things that I am proud of is being a Real Estate Broker in California. I work independently and I am also a licensed realtor in New York.”

It's one of the accomplishments she points to when asked what people might not know about her — another part of a life that extends beyond her identity as an artist.

GIN + Milk Room

When we asked GIN what Milk Room means to her, she kept it simple.

“Milk Room is about being fresh like Milk.”

But she also wanted to recognize what platforms like Milk Room can mean for artists building independently.

“I just want to give a shout out to Milk Room for giving independent artists the opportunity!”

That's exactly why these Community Spotlights exist.

GIN's journey has taken her from promoting and booking artists to releasing her own music, navigating the challenge of finding supporters, and turning her personal experiences into songs.

Now, the next chapter is “Demon in a Bottle.”
