A Look Into the Artist: Malachi Roth-Cohen By Julie Bozzay

As most kids do, Malachi Abraham Roth-Cohen began his artist journey around the age of 10. His mom worked as an accountant and would tell Malachi to go paint while she worked. Unlike most however, Malachi pursued the passion and made it a purpose.

Malachi started seriously painting in 2019 when he visited his grandmother, Margaret Vendryes, and she decided it was time. His grandmother, also a painter, had been working on a series of African Pop paintings that Malachi would spend his visits admiring. One day, she sat him down and said “today we are going to paint”. Malachi painted a truffula tree. His grandmother told him that he had a gift and needed to pursue it. She introduced him to oil painting and he never turned back.

He continued to cultivate his talents through classes in high school, studying under Concetta Mattioni.

Malachi decided to spread his talent. He began to seek out gallery bookings and commission pieces, but before bookings, comes networking. His first

commission pieces were requested by friends who aimed to support him (and get a cool painting out of it). Selling to friends however, was not the goal. In 2023 Malachi began to sell his art in a park in Philadelphia in the hopes that he would spread his brand. Malachi would also post pieces on his instagram, which later lead to requests for custom pieces.

In 2022 Malachi went gallery hopping in New York with a friend. Malachi asked each gallery that they went to if he could do an exhibition and finally one accepted. He officially secured the exhibition in 2024.

While in the process of booking the venue, Malachi’s friend who happened to be a publicist, organized an event in 2023 for street artists in Philadelphia to showcase their work. This was Malachi’s first official exhibition.

Malachi has always had a love for collaboration, involving himself in any form of art that he can. He has become a founder of a fashion brand, he participates in filmmaking, models, and so much more. He found a true partner upon starting school in the fall of 2023. Malachi met Helena Nguyen and the two of them discovered a love for collaborating together. They created E·ten, their collective artist name. They spend time painting together and showing their art at galleries.

Now, at only 21, Malachi has another gallery booked. It will take place in DC on Friday 07.03.2026 from 5-8pm at Expressed Resistance on 4113 Utah Ave,

Brentwood, Maryland. It is the first gallery for the venue and they are starting strong with Malachi and a few other artists. If you happen to be in DC, this is a must see.
