Vintage fashion has its own language. From “single stitch” to “deadstock,” these terms help collectors, resellers, and fashion lovers identify authenticity, era, construction, and cultural value.

Single Stitch
A construction method commonly found on vintage T-shirts from the 1980s and 1990s where the sleeve and bottom hems use a single line of stitching instead of double stitching.
Why it matters:
- Often signals older garments
- Associated with true vintage tees
- Popular among collectors
Important note:
Not every single stitch tee is valuable, and not every valuable vintage tee is single stitch.
Double Stitch
A newer construction method using two visible lines of stitching along hems and sleeves.
Commonly found on:
- modern blanks
- post-2000 garments
- reproduction tees
Deadstock
Vintage items that were never worn or sold at retail and still retain original tags or near-new condition.
Examples:
- unworn 90s band tees
- original sneaker inventory
- unused workwear
Deadstock pieces are often more valuable because of rarity and condition.
Fade
The natural aging and washing effect that softens or lightens fabric color over time.
Popular fades include:
- sun fade
- black fade
- charcoal fade
- vintage wash
In vintage culture, fading is often considered desirable because it gives garments character and uniqueness.
Distressing
Intentional or natural wear on a garment including:
- holes
- fraying
- cracking
- thinning fabric
- paint marks
True vintage distressing often develops naturally over decades.
Cracking
The aged cracking effect that appears on printed graphics over time.
Collectors often value:
- soft cracking
- evenly aged graphics
- authentic wear patterns
Heavy cracking can help indicate age and authenticity.
Boxy Fit
A wider, shorter silhouette commonly found in older vintage garments.
Characteristics:
- wider chest
- shorter length
- relaxed shape
- dropped shoulders
Boxy fits are highly sought after in modern streetwear.
Oversized Fit
A loose-fitting silhouette intentionally worn larger than standard sizing.
Vintage oversized fits became especially popular through:

Bootleg
Unofficial or unauthorized merchandise inspired by popular brands, artists, movies, or musicians.
Vintage bootlegs became famous in:

Reworked
Garments that have been altered, reconstructed, or transformed into new designs.

A completely unique item with no duplicates produced.

Made in USA
A manufacturing label commonly associated with older vintage garments from the 1980s and 1990s.
Collectors often seek Made in USA tags because they can indicate:
- older production era
- heavier fabric

Tag
The interior neck label of a garment used to help identify:
- era
- manufacturer
- authenticity
- approximate production year
Popular vintage tags include:

- Hanes
- Fruit of the Loom

- Changes
- Winterland
Graphic Tee
